"Faith-ful To The Originals" December 2, 2008 Paul S. Power (Nova Scotia, Canada) Back in the year 2000, Faith Hill had a big Christmas hit with the song "Where Are You, Christmas", which was from the movie "How The Grinch Stole Christmas". The music video for the song was amazing. Well, this is Faith's first full CD of Christmas music-and it's beautiful. Sorry, I was still looking at the cover. O.k.-this is indeed Faith's latest foray into the crazy, hectic world of yuletide music. Why do I say crazy and hectic? With a sales opportunity window that's not much over 8 weeks long, artists have to be quick to cash in on this year's retail market but also be good enough, and memorable enough, if they want to be part of next year's rotation of festive tunes. A noticeable trend that a lot of artists follow is to make seasonal standards funkier, more pop-oriented or more reflective of the type of music that they are known for. Faith Hill did not do this. For the most part, the songs captured here are fairly true to the originals yet sound even fresher, thanks to the amazing orchestral arrangements. It's been a long time since I heard better sounding versions of "Holly Jolly Christmas", "Away In A Manger" and "Silent Night". For variety sake, there's a jazzier feel presented on "Winter Wonderland" and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" and both are fantastic. This disc offers a perfect balance between voice and instruments, as the music never drowns out Faith's voice, it acts as a perfect compliment and companion. This balance makes "What Child Is This" and "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" stand out even more so with Faith's beautiful voice. Faith did include one new song, "A Baby Changes Everything", and even though it sounds like one of Faith's more contemporary ballads it's actually about the Virgin Mary and the Newborn King. It's a really nice addition to a CD filled with older standards. A note to the men out there; sorry guys, only Tim McGraw is getting Faith Hill for Christmas but this may very well be the next best thing. No, not even close really, but this is a great Christmas CD, well worth giving as a gift, or just for yourself to listen to.
A pleasant traditionnal Christmas album November 28, 2008 Louis (Quebec, Canada) "Joy to the world", Faith Hill's very first Christmas album, will be welcomed as a real treat for her legion of loyal fans. It's slick, well-produced, and slightly old-fashioned (which is exactly how I like my Christmas music). Her voice is still as expressive as ever, most notably on the album's only original song "A baby changes everything" but also on classics such as "O holy night", "What child is this", "Adeste fideles". Faith's choice of material is impeccable; she has selected some of the tracks most associated with Christmas, and the track listing is mouth-watering for Christmas music fans. There are some light-hearted moments too, and they work especially well for her; "Holly Jolly Christmas" is delightful, and so are "Winter wonderland" and "Santa Claus is coming to town". It is not exactly what I expected in terms of arrangements - I was expecting something more upbeat, with a little more twang (she's a country singer, after all); and it must be said that the album is a little short. But if you like Faith Hill and Christmas music, you'll certainly be getting your money's worth with this one.
A very special Christmas album, a classic. November 18, 2008 All About Music (West Coast, B.C.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you like traditional, old style Christmas music, this is a great album. Faith Hill's voice sounds fantastic, her somewhat Celtic version of 'What Child is This' is awesome. And an almost a cappella version of 'Little Drummer Boy' which is not one of my fav Christmas tunes, but after this version, it is a song I appreciate more. I have lots of Christmas Albums and Nat King Cole 'The Christmas Song' takes the top spot...Faith's album is way up my list too, enjoy.
"tis the season for Faith October 4, 2008 Amanda Richards (Georgetown, Guyana) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Seems like Christmas starts earlier and earlier every year, and this year the new albums have already started coming out. "Country" and "Christmas" have always gone hand in hand, and this is Faith Hill's very first album of Christmas music. There are ten traditional carols, plus the single "A Baby Changes Everything", and the album has a big band sound that will remind you of those old black and white holiday movies that they dig out every single year. "A Baby Changes Everything" puts the Christmas story in a modern light, beginning: "Teenage girl, much too young / Unprepared for what's to come / A baby changes everything" and ending: "My whole life is turned around / I was lost and now I'm found / A baby changes everything" I found that on a couple of the tracks Faith out-sang the backing orchestra, but the following songs are the ones to put on your playlist this season: Joy to the World What Child is This? Little Drummer Boy Away in a Manger O Holy Night Winter Wonderland A Baby Changes Everything Thanks Faith, for not changing up the traditional carols and making them unrecognizable, and although the big band sound isn't my thing, this is a warm and fuzzy album to add to your playlist. Recommended for fans of old movies, big bands, and traditional carols. Rated: 4.5 stars Amanda Richards
