4 von 5 Sternen Great reading   Oktober 27, 2006

Lynn Flewelling is one of my favorite authors, and this book, as well as the rest of the series made her so. This is definately a great story, filled with great characters and worth every cent that I had to pay, and worth every minute, no, second that I spend reading it. A definate must for all fantasy fans. The only thing that I had trouble with (and that only for a short time) is the fact that two characters are gay. The reason for my having trouble here is, that I aint, and it is hard to imagine to be so. But the author only describes the feelings the characters have for each other and does not describe any practises. A perfect book for any fan. A must for fans in search of good reading.

Juli 20, 2006

5 von 5 Sternen A thrilling continuation of the story   Mai 8, 2001

This book is a lot darker than the first. It is literally haunted by sinister dreams and foreshadowing of evil. I read it in less than 3 days, I was so drawn in. The characters are developing and the relationship between Alec and Seregil deepens. As pointed out by another reader the prophecy could have been worked out a bit more, but nonetheless the book has a fast pace and the final ship voyage of Alec freezes your blood. The idea of the dyrmagnos is really horrifying, and the rituals for the Death God show a strong influence of horror. My main reason for liking this book, however is the characters again. Beka Cavish gets a good role, growing into a worthy commander, and finally Alec and Seregil's bond proves to be something very special indeed. I like the way the characters don't get away unhurt, every single one of the survivors carries deep physical or emotional wounds afterwards, which is the only realistic consequence of such experiences. Alec has grown from the innocent boy to a young man to be reckoned with. This is continued beautifully in the 3rd book, I might add. The world Flewelling draws has some blank spots, mostly in the system of magic, but for it has an unusual feeling of being real to me. It's full of dirt and glory and intrigues and politics, full of very human motives. Unfortunately the sort of main characters she draws haven't crossed my path yet *g*

4 von 5 Sternen A fun and compelling read   April 11, 2000

After having read countless numbers of excellent fantasy novelsover the years, I was pleasantly surprised to discover LynnFlewelling's duology (thanks to a friend who loaned them both to me) when I thought there were no more fantasy novels out there to keep me reading until the early hours of the morning. What compelled me the most were Flewelling's main characters, Seregil and Alec. It is their relationship and its slow, somewhat reluctant development that kept me reading. But I have to throw in my few spots of criticism--the dialogue throughout the first book was often awkward and jarring but Flewelling smoothes much of this out by book two. Also, the system of magic in this world is not well explained--likewise, the prophecy that Flewelling devises that overshadows all of the main characters is not clearly laid out and the role of each character in fulfilling the prophecy is also murky. I felt that many of the main characters could have been more flushed out and I finished the series feeling that they were often too stereotypical (including many aspects of Seregil and Alec). But, with these two books, Flewelling has created a world that will necessitate much more probing (more books!) and I am looking forward to further additions to the series that will give more depth and dimension to the world established here. (Oh--and a final note: I have to mention that Flewelling's home page on the web is worth visiting for those of you more curious about the series and Flewelling's background, especially her love of horror as evidenced by many scenes in Stalking Darkness!) END

5 von 5 Sternen Even better than the first book   März 20, 2000
The second book in the Nightrunner series is the best one, so far. Flewelling draws on the character development in the first book and builds upon a solid story. This one you will not want to put down. The characters become more personal and their activities more risky.
