Neverwhere's protagonist, Richard Mayhew, learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished. He ceases to exist in the ordinary world of London Above, and joins a quest through the dark and dangerous London Below, a shadow city of lost and forgotten people, places, and times. His companions are Door, who is trying to find out who hired the assassins who murdered her family and why; the Marquis of Carabas, a trickster who trades services for very big favors; and Hunter, a mysterious lady who guards bodies and hunts only the biggest game. London Below is a wonderfully realized shadow world, and the story plunges through it like an express passing local stations, with plenty of action and a satisfying conclusion. The story is reminiscent of Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but Neil Gaiman's humor is much darker and his images sometimes truly horrific. Puns and allusions to everything from Paradise Lost to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz abound, but you can enjoy the book without getting all of them. Gaiman is definitely not just for graphic-novel fans anymore. --Nona Vero

Neverwhere hat im Rahmen der Amazon Rabattaktion fuer englische Buecher den Weg zu mir gefunden. Doch was fuer ein Meisterwerk habe ich da an Land gezogen?
Zunaechst einmal ist Gaiman ein hervorragender Beobachter der Merkwuerdigkeiten des Alltages, die er mit geradezu kindlicher Phantasie fuellt. Beispiele: "Mind the gap": Warum muss man so auf die Ritze zwischen Bahnsteig und Bahn achten? Und warum fahren in U-Bahnen abgeschlossene, dunkle Wagen mit? Gaiman findet darauf phantastische, ueberraschende Antworten.
Dann sind seine Charaktere wundervoll gegen den Strich besetzt und voller Ueberraschungen. Dazu das faszinierende Setting von London below mit dem "floating market", modrigen Kanaelen und albtraumhaften Bruecken. Als ob das nicht schon genug waere, gelingt es Gaiman auch noch, einen spannenden Handlungsfaden zu weben, der trotz aller Skurrilitaeten nie die Logik verliert. Seit dem Lesen von Neverwhere sehe ich Tueren in einem ganz anderen Licht.
Gaimans Wortwitz reicht an Pratchett heran, allerdings verliert er sich nicht darin. So bleibt Neverwhere auch fuer nicht Muttersprachler auf englisch gut zu lesen. Mir persoenlich liegt Gaiman daher naeher als Pratchett, auch wenn sie einiges verbindet. Fuer mich absolut empfehlenswert.

Had I known there would be so much fantasy in this book, I would not have bought it. I'm glad I did. What a fantastic read (in both senses). The characters, the world and the events are described in such a way, that you can only wonder how Gaiman comes up with them and still make them quite believable. Next time you're in London, you will unconsciously look at a drain, asking yourself if there might be.....

absolutely brillant, Gaiman shows his unique art in this one of a kind novel; where you can be sure of to have never read something like this before; it's a kind of cross-over between Terry Pratchett, Terry Gilliams, Douglas Adams and Peter Pan...but it is no childrens book

I bought this book because it had such good reviews here on Amazon. But I was quite disappointed. While it achieves to create some atmosphere (thus the second star) it hardly is a captivating story. If I hadn't taken it on a very long plane trip I wouldn't have finished it. The plot is utterly absurd and rather boring (quest after quest), characters are shallow and the style is worthy of a mediocre high shool student.
There are a few (although short) enthralling passages and - very rarely - some witty metaphors. But that's it. I wouldn't recommend it, even for a long plane trip there are tons of books that provide better entertainment.

Ich kann mich der vorstehenden Bewertung nur anschliessen. Dieses Buch ist eine Klasse fuer sich. Die Idee einer Parallelwelt unter unserer und die entsprechende Umsetzung mit viel Phantasie ist bemerkenswert. Die Charaktere - auch oder vor allem die der "Boesen" - sind toll beschrieben. Es macht einfach Spass dieses Buch zu lesen.
Es gibt hierzu uebrigens eine BBC-Serie, die das Buch praktisch 1:1 wiedergibt - auch sehr empfehlenswert!
