I think "Slam" is a book for teenagers or young andults, who like the mix of humour, sport and love stories. The novel is about one way young teenagers should not go - getting pregnant at the age of 16 or 17. So in my opinion it is a good book to read at school while discussing topics like teenage problems or teenage pregnancies. The story is written in a funny sort of way and easy to understand allthough there are a lot of slang words which you don't learn in English classes. Unfortunately, the future-whizzing is a bit confusing and also the fact that Sam talks to his Tony Hawk poster. All in all the novel is very good and I recommend it to you. By Rangna Wanke
a good novel for everyone Oktober 22, 2008 bookreader 2 aus 2 fanden die folgende Rezension hilfreich
"What's incedible to me is that you can keep out of trouble very much every minut of your life apart from 5 seconds, and that 5 seconds can get you into the best trouble of all, just about" You will remember this quote when you read the book because it is pretty much what it is all about. The 15-year-old protagonist Sam who lives together with his mother in a small flat in London lives the normal, carefree teenage life. He spends his spear time by skating around with his friends and does not have any big problems at school and generally in his life. Because his mother gave birth to him when she was 16 years old he actually is not very pleased with his family's story because all his relatives had always done some serious mistake, which had ruined their lifes. But then he makes the same mistake, his mother has made. After having unprotected sex with his girlfriend Alicia who he met at the birthday party of her mother, he gets to know about her pregnancy. How Sam handles this situation and if the story takes a good end you can find out by yourself... At the beginnging of the book Sam is a child yet. But he becomes an adult during the novel. He really changes his mind and learns to deal with his problems. While reading the book I could imagine very well how it would be to be in such a situation like Sam is. The reason is the style how is written. If I would not know the author's real age I would propose this book is written by an teenager. The book is written with great imagination and Nick Hornby has the greatest ability to put himself in the situation of someone other, even if the person is 35 years younger than him and lives in a diffrent generation. The novel is a pleasure to read and really worth for young and mature people. In my mind the novel has a little bit to much fantasy. Some points seems very unrealistic to me. For example when Sam got wizzed into the future. But never the less I really recomend this book to everyone. Either older people or teenagers can reed the book and have mich fun with it.
Nick Hornby's "Slam" Oktober 22, 2008 D. Schneider 1 aus 1 fanden die folgende Rezension hilfreich
"If my old life was about to change, then I wanted the old life to last for as long as possible." That is a very typical attitude of Sam, the first-person narrator in Nick Hornby's novel `Slam}. After his earlier works `About a Boy}, `Fever Pitch} and `High Fidelity} Nick Hornby comes up with a new touching story about a young man's fate. `Slam} is the story of the sixteen-year-old boy Sam who falls in love with Alicia. After they meet at Alicia's mother's birthday party they spend a lot of time together. They are watching TV and having sex every day until Sam breaks up with her. It is Sam's birthday when they meet again. The reason for the meeting is that Alicia is late with her period and thinks she is pregnant. Sam is scared and confused and runs away to the seaside town Hastings. He tries to leave his old life behind and throws away his mobile. But of course this try does not work and he comes back after a day. Now the troubles start: they have to tell their parents and manage their new situation. Strange things happen to Sam where he can have a look into his future. Sam Jones is a sixteen-year old boy with a very young mother. He loves to skate ("skating=skateboarding") and talks to his Tony Hawk poster. He can be very childish and runs away from his responsibilities. Alicia Burns is a beautiful sixteen-year-old girl who knows that everyone likes her. When he gets pregnant she is sure that she wants to keep the baby. Sam's mother was 16 when she gave birth to Sam. That is why she is afraid of Sam making the same mistakes like her. The message of this novel could be that we have to take the responsibility for the things we do, because we cannot run away or hide. Bad things can happen to everyone although we always try to do the right. The novel deals with young people in England, how they think about their future and what some of them do to destroy it. Great Britain has the highest youth-pregnancy rate in Europe and Hornby gives us an impression of one of them. It also shows the different classes in England and especially in London. `Slam} is a funny and likable novel for readers in every age. It is realistic and deals with modern problems. It strengths are definitely Sam, who is so lovely, and the plot which is interesting and modern. The speech is very up-to-date with a lot of irony in it. There is development in Sam's behaviour that also makes it interesting to read on. All together `Slam} is a really nice book to read that makes you to read on. It is fun and tragically in one and gives you the impression to be in England for as long as you read.
Review to Nick Hornby's Slam Oktober 22, 2008 Sebastian Turban (Frankfurt, Hessen) 1 aus 1 fanden die folgende Rezension hilfreich
"I coulnd't believe what I was hearing!". This quote of Nick Hornby's novel Slam is exactly what you will think while reading it. "Slam" is Hornby's latest release after best sellers like "Fever Pitch", "High Fidelity" and "About a boy" which have all been picturized. "Slam" deals with the problem of having a baby at a very young age. Sam, the main protagonist, meets Alicia. Both are not grown up yet but they become a couple, have sex and Alicia gets pregnant. They decide to have the baby. While the story is told, Sam often gets a hint of what his future will be like. In fact, he is send to the future to see what life will be like with a baby. But he is not the only one with a problem: His mom also becomes pregnant. It is interessting to read how the cope with their situations. As I already mentioned, Sam is the main protagonist of the story. He is alsmost 16, a askater and partly very childish. His role model is Tony Hawk, the world's best skateboarder. He has a poster opf TH - that's what he calls him - on his wall and he talks to it. And it answeres. That is beacause he read Hawks book quite a few times and thinks of quotes that match with answeres that TH could return. When he finds out about Alicia being pregnant, he is not sure if he can handle all that. He is sent to the future a few times to see what he will have to do when the baby is born. Sam is a typical teenager if you look at his reactions. e.g. He runs away from home. But he decides to come back and he also manages to change the dipers. Alicia, Sam's girlfriend is introduced as a very beautiful girl. She is the type of girl that could have any boy. But she falls in love with Sam and she eventually becomes pregnant. Since she wants to keep the baby she forces Sam to take the responsibility for her and the baby. In contrast to Sa, she is not sent to the future so she has no idea of what her life will be like with the baby. And there is Sam's mom. She is 32 and was 16 when she got Sam. She has just split up with her boyfreind but meets Mark, who becomes her new boyfriend and in the end the father of her second baby. She is the one that makes Sam go to a birthday party where his whole life will change, where he meets Alicia. As you may think, she is not too happy about Sam becoming a dad at the age of 16. But she gets along with it. The novel presents a topic a lot of young boys and girls are confronted with nowadays. It shows that teenagers might be able to deal with that situation, but also the problems that come with a baby. It makes you think twice if you would have an abortion or not. The The topic is very up-to-date and I think that it can really be an assistance for teenagers with the same problem. Eventually, I would recommend the novel to everyone, of course, espacially to young parents or to kids becoming parents. It is a serious topic presented by Sam, who brings a funny touch to the story with his childish thinking.
