5 out of 5 stars Absolotely a must have for Space RTS Fans   April 13, 2008
Mr. Dj Tufton (England)
The Homeworld series is one of the most amazing games I have played in my lifetime, it's highly atmospheric, has a great storyline and you can have sine great multi-player game too. The best bit is that Homeworld 2 has such an extensive line of fans that you can also download modifications to the game which add hundreds of new ships, weapons, races and more meaning this game has such a long life-span that you will be playing this years after you have brought it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Game - But Cataclysm should have showed the way   June 4, 2006
Andy Tanner (Reading UK)
When I was first given Homeworld (1) I was astounded at the storyline and the instant playability of the game. The camara focus and movement was the first time I had seen this system and within hours I had picked up the controls and was vectoring scouts to attack in the first wave to distract the fire , then following up with other strike craft to kill and disable the escorts while I was busy capturing the capital ships. It was easy to control and had distinctly difficult single player missions in places. The follow up game (?) Cataclysm picked up with another great storyline and some interesting modifications to the original game which made it a very different proposition. When I bought Homeworld 2 I expected another leap forward in technology and creativity, while the game is still technically excellent and I have played it through, somehow it has just lost the impact and soul of homeworld (1) and Cataclysm. Perhaps I expected too much, but with so many games the newer versions are packed with interest and I just felt that this was a missed opportunity for a much better game. Don't get me wrong, the AI is better and the simple tactics described earlier just won't work in Homeworld 2 as the enemy is distinctly smarter. It is a good game and most people will enjoy it, but if you have Homeworld and Cataclysm you will probably be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent game   May 9, 2005

There's almost nothing bad you can say about Homeworld 2, such is the quality of this masterpiece. It's a fully 3D RTS, something being in space allows beyond your average C&C-style RTS. The range of units is impressive, from tiny interceptors to the massive battlecruisers. Resource collection is simple, with resource collectors which, at the push of a button, gather resources independently from the nearest available source. The wreckage of large ships can also be harvested for further cash. The story is good if perhaps a little thin, with cut sequences rendered in a black and white drawing style which is suprisingly effective. The ships themselves are beautiful to behold, and you'll find yourself zooming in simply to admire the models. Space battles are spectacular, with the fighters and corvettes racing between the frigates and huge capital ships, leaving exhaust trails mingling with ion beams, missiles and cannon volleys. When not micro-managing the battles, you can zoom out and watch the entire battle zone, witnessing your fighters going up in tiny explosions and the capital ships in explosions which white-out the screen - imagine the grandeur of the great Star Wars battles and you have the essence of Homeworld 2.
The AI is generally good, and only rarely will you find yourself raging at the stupidity of you units, usually the smaller ships racing into a firestorm. More often than not, if something has gone wrong it's probably you. You may find certain units are fairly useless, such as the bombers and the frigates, which are always targeted first and quickly destroyed. This can sometimes be advantageous, as they may prove to be useful decoys whilst your larger ships unleash hell upon the enemy.
The enemy - the Vaygr - are only playable in skirmishes, but are only really worth experimenting with for curiosity's sake, as some of the units aren't as good and you'll find yourself finding the familiarity of the Higaran protagonists more appealing. The more persistant may go further with the Vaygr, but the Higaran units are certainly not tiresome.
All in all, this game is fantastic, with visually gorgeous graphics, spectacular battles and the kind of 'race against time' story that will have you playing for hours to save the Higaran people.

5 out of 5 stars MUST GET THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!   February 25, 2005

I borrowed this game off my mate and now I am buying it for myself. I don't normally play spaced aged games but this you have to get though, the graphics are excellent you can have big space battles you start with a flagship in space and you have mine resource units for asteroids and you build your space armada from these resource units. There are weapons likes lasers and bombs and guns etc. Basically space aged guns that are in the future ut is quite easy to get grips with, the environment is excellent and graphcallt good as well. YOU MUST GET THIS GAME, YOU WON'T REGRET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece in strategy   January 20, 2005

As with the previous reviews I loved this game. The graphics are stunning (especially on 1600x1200).

It has a much better interface than homeworld, with all the control at easy access.

Unlike homeworld the missions are more action packed, and you dont get much time to balance and rebuild your fleet (like in homeworld) once the mission is complete all resources are automatically collected and you hyperspace out to the next mission.

Missions are tricky with them starting immediately in hostile situations on a number of missions. However they can be completed using thought and tactics. Especially using the correct ship for the job. There has been a couple of missions where I've had to replace all my interceptors with bombers to get the job done.

Overall this game is a stunner, its taken me 2 months to complete, and once you've completed all 15 missions its actually satisfying as you really need to work for it.

5 stars from me.
